James A. Daly, Jr. 80, passed away Monday, March 9, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital surrounded by family. He was born in Savannah, GA, the son of the late James A. Daly, Sr. and Leona Nesmith Daly. Jim attended Sacred Heart Elementary and graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1953, where he played varsity football and baseball and was named to the All-State Football Team. Jim could not have been more overjoyed at the news of Benedictine’s 2014 GHSA AA State Championship.
He was a member of the US Naval Reserve and a past Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus, Council #631. He also was a long time member the Hibernian Society of Savannah. In 1968, he partnered with Gerald Pollack, to form Pollack and Daly Photography that soon became Savannah’s premier photography studio, capturing multi-generational family portraits, weddings, and other milestone events. In 1989, Jim and his wife, Margaret, started Jim Daly Photography, later to become Daly & Salter Photography. An artist behind the camera, Jim had such a powerful way of always getting people to smile.
Jim, affectionately known as “Bop”, was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, nephew, and uncle. His family brought him such happiness, and he would drop everything to assist where needed. In addition, he had an immense love and appreciation for the outdoors. He was an avid hunter with a passion for raising hunting dogs and shared this enthusiasm with his family and many friends. Jim is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Margaret; his aunt Mildred Nesmith McKenzie of Savannah; his two younger brothers, Thomas F. Daly (Gloria) of Stone Mountain & Gerald P. Daly (Sydney) of Decatur; sister-in-law Terry Daly of Athens; sister-in-law Betty Stephens of Garden City; his three beloved children, Kathy Daly Salter (Steve), Dr. James A. Daly III (Lake), Dr. Dale P. Daly (Susan), all of Savannah; and his eight grandchildren, all of Savannah, who brought him so much joy: Jonathan Salter, Madison Daly, James Daly IV, Louisa Daly, Kate Daly, Hannah Daly, Jack Daly, Sam Daly; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and his loving companion dog, “Good Hope.”
Honorary pallbearers are the Members of the Benedictine Military School Class of 1953, members of the Hibernian Society of Savannah and Jim’s hunting buddies. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Savannah has lost one its finest Irish sons….Visitation will be held on Friday, March 13th from 5-7 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel followed by the funeral mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14th at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with the inurnment ceremony at the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund at Benedictine Military School in Jim’s honor to support the Stadium fund. All donations should be directed to the James Daly Class of 53 Memorial Fund and can be mailed to: Benedictine Military School, 6502 Seawright Drive, Savannah, GA, 31406.
